What Is Food Insecurity?

What is food insecurity?

Food insecurity describes a household’s inability to provide enough food for every person to live an active, healthy life. Food insecurity is one way we can measure and assess the risk of hunger. In the United States currently one in nine people struggle with hunger.

What causes food insecurity?

One "bad month" can be enough to plunge a household into food insecurity. Layoffs at work, unexpected car maintenance or an accident on the job can suddenly force a family to choose between buying food and paying bills. A global pandemic can dramatically heighten this vulnerability.

That’s why many working families, including thousands of households who don’t qualify for federal nutrition assistance, depend on the Feeding America network of food banks to help make ends meet during difficult times. The Feeding America network serves nearly every community in the United States, helping more than more than 40 million people — including 12 million children and 7 million seniors.

Who can enter the event?

This challenge is designed for anyone and everyone! With the challenge of covering as few as 18 miles a week, anyone in your family can participate.  You can also encourage family members to join you to help you achieve your goal.  You can run/bike/walk/swim from anywhere to participate.

What do I get?

Your inherent reward is that you are improving yourself while supporting those in need of food. All challenges will also receive a limited edition Blue Ridge to The Beach T-Shirt - unisex OR female-specific. In addition, all will receive a gorgeous Custom Medal to proudly display your accomplishment. And each challenger will receive a virtual challenge bib that can be downloaded from the race page, participation in an active leaderboard, live map tracking along our course and a digital finisher's certificate with all your stats! We will also be promoting random prizes throughout the challenge to help make it more fun - and keep you more connected with other participants!

When will my shirt, medal and sticker be mailed to me?

We will start processing your race packet once registration for your wave closes (one month after the wave starts).  It usually takes between 8-10 weeks from that date to receive your packet.

***We have been experiencing some delays in getting our supplies. Please have patience at this time, as you may receive your items beyond the 8-10 weeks***

How do I complete the challenge?

You can complete it any way you wish. You can walk, roll, run, spin - whatever makes you happy! And you can cover your miles any day, and in any way, that best works for you.

When Can I Start?

You can start anytime after your Wave start date and you will have six months in total to complete your challenge.  But the later you start, the more challenging your challenge will be!
